Industrial AI readiness

How do we know whether maintenance data is ready for AI?

Readiness depends on the decision the AI will support, the quality and accessibility of relevant information, and the people who will review and act on its output.

What to look for

Pick a narrow use case such as finding approved maintenance documentation or helping a planner review backlog descriptions. Identify the source systems and responsible owners, then sample actual records for completeness, consistent asset IDs, dates and useful descriptions.

Practical next steps

A successful demonstration does not establish operational readiness. Site procedures and qualified personnel remain responsible for safety and maintenance decisions.

Assess readiness for one decision

Start with a specific user and question. If the use case is locating an approved manual, identify the documents, asset identifiers, revision status, access permissions and owner. If the use case is reviewing work orders, examine representative descriptions, timestamps, equipment IDs and closeout information relevant to that task.

Check five areas before a pilot

Use a small representative test set and compare results against the current process, including review effort and mistakes. A clean demonstration on a few selected records does not establish readiness across the plant. Safety and operating decisions remain with authorized people under site procedures.
