Maintenance effectiveness

What is the difference between planned and scheduled maintenance?

Planning determines what a job requires; scheduling assigns ready work to a time and available resources.

What to consider

A job plan describes the scope, job steps, estimated labor, materials, tools and applicable prerequisites. A schedule coordinates when approved work will occur with the people, equipment access and operating windows available. The exact responsibilities vary by site, but a date alone does not make a job planned.

Practical steps

A practical example

A motor needs replacement. The planner verifies the motor specification, job steps, estimated hours, lifting equipment and approved work controls. The scheduler then agrees on an operating window and checks that the required craft workers and resources are available. A date on the calendar without the correct motor or access does not make the work ready. After the job, the crew records any mismatch so the plan can be improved.
